Fonctionnalité
The Canopy Pavilion provides a new social gathering space on the campus. Since recently planted trees do not provide sufficient shade during the hot summer days, the Canopy Pavilion meets a critical need for the well-being of the university community. Instrumented with a barbecue grill, the Pavilion is open to all. It creates an inclusive environment where chance encounters over a shared meal build new human connections, in a relaxing setting with direct views of the Swiss mountains.
Environnement
The Canopy's Pavilion shading membrane employs an innovative material system that combines structural efficiency with optimal shading performance, while allowing for minimal material usage and maximal potential for re-use and material recycling.
Économie
Minimal use of materials and maximal potential for re-use have been a guiding principle for the design of the Canopy Pavilion. The aluminum plates and stainless steel connectors are extremely durable and thus guarantee and long live-time of the structure. All plate connectors are identical, which simplifies manufacturing and ensures easy re-use. These main components are also un-coated which simplifies recycling.

Contexte
The Canopy is located at Place Cosandey, the most prominent location of the EPFL campus situated between Sanaa’s Rolex Learning Center and Kengo Kuma’s EPFL Pavilions. As the recent renovation of this location employs circles as a key design element, the client requested a circular structure that was in harmony with the Agora Lombard Odier, a slanted, disk-shaped seating area.
